Cart loaded in the van.
We have big plastic bags, a trash can, shovel, broom, 2 5 gallon buckets, a vest, 2 pairs of gloves, a sharps container, one can of coke and one bottle of water.
most importantly, motivated workers
Kevin and I met at McDonalds near San Mateo and Gibson
From there we drove to State of the Heart at California and Linn to find Benzo
Unsure if we would find him there
But Kevin made short work of the search
This was my first time meeting Benzo
He had just woken up from under a pile of blankets on the sidewalk on the fair ground's south west perimeter
After a brief intro of walking and chatting about the goals and purpose of the work, we loaded into the van again
Off to Fox park
To pickup cans, misc small trash, cigarette butts, dog poop and more.
The three of us covered the park multiple times in just 30 min
Happy with the park, we moved south on Alvarado
Collecting mostly small bits of trash while also removing obvious and obstructing weeds from the sidewalk
Moving a pair of glasses found dropped in a driveway to a safer place. Hope the owner finds them
Just about done with our 2 hour shift, we returned to the park.
A quick chat with a neighbor walking her dog about our work
Benzo and I talked about measuring our work’s impact
To count the # of trash bags? The total weight collected? Pictures?
I like to count how many condoms we pick up, I joked
Benzo replied: I got four condoms today.
It was a good day. And Kevin’s birthday!
Back to it on Monday
